Redesigning and relaunching Fondos API Docs

Fondos API is the companys core product, but its documentation no longer reflected the platforms B2B maturity. As product design lead, I redesigned and relaunched the API site to improve developer onboarding and present the API as a credible, product-grade experience - without rebuilding infrastructure or adding technical debt.

Challenge

Fondo’s API documentation was functional but outdated, with poor UX, unclear navigation, and limited onboarding support. It no longer reflected the platform’s B2B maturity and made it difficult for both developers and non-technical stakeholders to understand, trust, and evaluate the product. At the same time, the site needed a fast relaunch without rebuilding infrastructure, introducing vendor lock-in, or adding technical debt.

Approach

I treated the API documentation as a core product surface and onboarding experience. Working closely with developers and the tech lead, I chose a system-first, low-debt approach using Redocly, customizing the experience directly in code and collaborating through GitHub. The focus was on improving clarity, navigation, and visual credibility, while supporting both experienced developers and first-time visitors — optimizing for fast understanding and sustainable maintenance rather than exhaustive documentation.

Key challenges:

- Documentation assumed technical users, with limited onboarding or guidance for others - Outdated UI, navigation, and mobile experience reduced product credibility - Needed a fast relaunch without rebuilding infrastructure or adding technical debt

Design leverage:

- Treating the API site as a core product surface, not just supporting documentation - Using a token-based, system-first approach aligned with engineering workflows - Collaborating directly in code with developers to reduce handoffs and accelerate delivery

Impact

The relaunched API documentation presents Fondo’s API as a credible, product-grade experience, improving clarity, navigation, and mobile usability for both developers and non-technical stakeholders. The system-first approach enabled a fast relaunch without added technical debt and established a maintainable foundation for ongoing product and documentation evolution.
